Briana’s Journey: Passion Meets Purpose
I’m Briana, the owner and founder of EmpowerMe. From a young age, I knew I wanted to be an educator, to share my love of learning and exploration with others. Over the past decade, I've had the privilege of teaching special needs students of all ages, across various subjects. This journey has fueled my passion for social and emotional learning, especially as I witnessed many programs struggle to meet the unique needs of these individuals. Advocating for this special population became my mission.
I developed a deep personal appreciation for the power of movement, mindfulness, and yoga. These practices helped me navigate the challenging years as an educator, providing balance and resilience. Throughout my career it became increasingly clear there was a lack of comprehensive programs that address special individuals as a whole. Additionally, traditional school systems have limitations in meeting the needs of these individuals. This realization prompted me in creating EmpowerMe.
I became a certified yoga teacher to deepen my practice. Mindful movement has enriched my life and profoundly impacted those I've worked with. By addressing physical, social, emotional, and mental well-being, EmpowerMe offers a holistic approach to lifelong empowerment.
Our goal is to create a space where individuals can tap into their full potential, supporting well-balanced minds and bodies for all.

Instructors are certified and have specialized training in working with individuals with special needs. They are knowledgeable in anatomy, physiology, and injury prevention.
Before attending a session, we collect intake forms to understand each participant’s physical abilities, limitations, and any specific medical conditions or concerns, to help tailor the practice to meet their needs safely.
We emphasize gradual progression in the practice, encouraging participants to listen to their bodies and not push beyond their limits. This approach helps prevent overexertion and injuries.
We can use a variety of adaptive equipment such as yoga blocks, straps, bolsters, and chairs to support participants in achieving poses comfortably and safely.
Instructors provide clear, step-by-step instructions and demonstrations for each pose, ensuring participants understand how to perform them safely.
Instructors offer modifications and alternative poses to accommodate different abilities and ensure that all participants can engage in the session without risk of injury.

We understand that individuals with special needs may have varying levels of stamina, focus, and comfort. Our sessions are designed to be flexible and accommodating to meet each participant’s unique needs. Here’s how we ensure a supportive and adaptable environment:
Participants are encouraged to participate at their own pace. If they need to take breaks or step out, or rest for a moment, they are welcome to do so without any pressure.
We provide sensory supports to help participants self-regulate and stay engaged.
Breaks and rest periods will be built into each session, additionally participants can utilize these strategies taught as needed to take a moment to regroup before rejoining their session.
Instructors are trained to offer individualized modifications and alternative activities to keep participants engaged and comfortable throughout the session.
We use visuals and clear cues to help participants understand the structure of the session and anticipate breaks and transitions.
We welcome input from parents and caregivers to understand each participant's needs and preferences, ensuring we provide the most effective support.
We use positive reinforcement to encourage participation and celebrate small achievements, fostering a positive and encouraging environment.

Preparing your student for a session can help them feel more comfortable and ready to participate. Here are some tips to help them get ready:
Talk to your participant about what to expect during the session. Explain potential activities they may be doing, such as stretching, breathing exercises, and fun games. We encourage you to utilize our FREE Yoga Social Story in preparation for a session. The social story will help participants understand what to expect, easing anxiety and preparing them for a positive experience. Ensure your participant wears comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows for easy movement. Avoid clothing with zippers or buttons that could cause discomfort.
Make sure your participant is well-hydrated and has eaten before their session, allow for at least 1-2 hours to digest food prior if possible. This helps maintain energy levels during the session and decrease discomfort.
Bring any necessary items. Pack a water bottle and any personal items that might help your participant feel more comfortable, such as a favorite sensory tool or comfort object.
Set realistic expectations by letting your participant know that it’s okay to take breaks, ask for help, or not get every movement perfect. The goal is to enjoy the experience and benefit from the practice, not to achieve perfection.
Encourage your student with positive reinforcement and praise for their efforts, both before and after the session. This can boost their confidence and motivation.

Yes, caretakers are welcome and encouraged to participate in sessions! We believe that involving caretakers can enhance the overall experience and benefits for individuals with special needs. We ask that if this experience is one you and your participant are seeking, that you please sign up for the Empowered Family session so that we can accommodate and account for space and needs of all participants.

We understand that participants may face various behavioral challenges, and our sessions are designed to accommodate and support these needs in a compassionate and effective manner. Our specially trained instructors will provide a calm and structured environment to help students feel secure and reduce anxiety, additionally here are some ways that we may address behavioral challenges:

A flexible class structure so that pace, activities or focus can be tailored to current student needs.
